Two Indigenous Languages Disappear Every Month and the Oral Knowledge Recorded Only in Those Languages Disappears With Them

The United Nations estimates that on average, two Indigenous languages disappear every month worldwide, with roughly 40% of the world's languages — most of them Indigenous — threatened with long-term extinction. The UN has declared 2022-2032 the International Decade of Indigenous Languages specifically to address this. What's lost isn't just vocabulary: these languages carry traditional ecological knowledge, oral histories, and legal/social systems that were never written down anywhere else, and once the last fluent speaker dies, that knowledge is permanently gone, not archived.
